How can nutrition support my fertility?

Making some changes to the way we eat can be one of the best ways to support our reproductive health, for both men and for women. As a nutrition therapist, I use evidence-based research to promote health and wellness through diet and lifestyle changes.

Firstly, I will take a detailed history of your journey so far so that I can focus on any nutritional deficiencies or imbalances that may be contributing to a particular symptom or health concern you have. We will then put together a nutrition, lifestyle, and supplement plan to support your health goals. It is important to ensure that we get to the root cause of why a symptom is presenting. Nutritional Therapy looks at each person as an individual and does not take a one size fits all approach.

What areas of fertility and women’s health can nutrition help with?

I cover a range of areas including; unexplained infertility, PCOS, endometriosis, fibroids or other hormonal conditions, male infertility, preparing your body for IVF or IUI to enhance your success, previous or recurrent miscarriages, and secondary infertility.

What if I think my diet is already pretty good?

If you have already reduced caffeine, alcohol, and sugar, that is great. However, there may be specific nutrients you are deficient in or foods that are triggering a symptom. It might also be that you have gut issues or hormone imbalances that need to be addressed.

How long will it take to see results?

When it comes to nutritional therapy, you may not see immediate results and you do need to be as consistent as possible. Having said that, the changes suggested will be manageable and your lifestyle and situation are always taken into consideration. I always recommend working together over a 12-week period to allow for an optimum window to support fertility issues, as that is the length of time it takes to improve egg and sperm quality, enhance IVF, as well as balancing your hormones, and addressing issues such as inflammation, gut issues or compromised digestion.

Pregnancy and postpartum

Optimising your nutrition both before and during pregnancy will not only give your baby the best start in life but research suggests a healthy pregnancy diet also has long-lasting effects that go well into childhood.

Pregnancy

Your nutrition during pregnancy can have a huge impact on the health and development of your baby. Consuming all the right foods can also make you feel more energised and ensure you are not depleted in any nutrients post-birth. Whilst you work with me, I will give you specific and personalised dietary and supplement recommendations based on the latest scientific research. I also look at lifestyle factors including sleep, exercise, and yoga to make sure your body is fully ready for birth.

Post partum

Giving birth is such a physically demanding process that your body needs to recover from. Not to mention sleep deprivation, fluctuating hormones, and anxiety about how to keep your little baby alive. I will support you by focusing on replenishing any nutrients that are likely to have been depleted during your pregnancy and those required for repair and recovery to help you feel your best. If you are breastfeeding, we will ensure you are getting all the vital nutrients needed for optimal milk production. All recommendations will be tailored to fit into your lifestyle and, of course, the time you have available.
